Reporting live (well, not quite) to you from Cineroom HQ, we have the latest reaction to the big news stories over the past 30 days. As always, we will present you with the facts, and then our take on them. We may have guest reporters every now and then – so look out for opportunities! This just in… here’s news story number one… LET THERE BE CARNAGE The facts: While you might think that space symbiote Venom would see an ally in the quick-spreading Coronavirus, it surely won't be pleased at the news that the sequel to the Tom Hardy-starring anti-superhero film will be delayed to next year. At least we do know the title now: Venom: Let There Be Carnage. Yes, that's an evocative title for the movie, which sees Hardy back as journalist Eddie Brock, who unwittingly merges with the powerful creature. Woody Harrelson is reprising his role (from the post-credits sequence) of serial killer Cletus Kasady, who ends up becoming similarly-powered supervillain Carnage. Taken from Empire Our take: A change of director with Andy Serkis at the helm and the addition of Woody Harrelson will certainly elevate the Venom series to new heights. The title, perhaps not so much. We have just over a year to wait to find out, thanks COVID-19! HUNGER GAMES PREQUEL CONFIRMED The facts: When news came last summer that author Suzanne Collins was returning to the universe of The Hunger Games for a prequel novel, it came bundled in with the fact that Lionsgate was in talks with the author to adapt it for the big screen. Now almost a year later, it’s official – the prequel story, titled The Ballad Of Songbirds And Snakes, is coming to the big screen from the studio, and filmmaker Francis Lawrence, who helmed Catching Fire and both Mockingjay Part 1 and Part 2, is on board as director. Taken from Empire Our take: The Hunger Games saga was a great five-year period early last decade, and it seems, Suzanne Collins couldn’t leave it alone. Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss Everdeen surely won’t be in it as it is set 64 year prior to the first original book. It’ll instead follow an 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow who becomes the tyrannical leader of Panem in Katniss’ time. Exciting times ahead for whenever cinemas open again! MORE AWESOME SOMGS FROM JAMES GUNN The facts: The Awesome Mix soundtracks are the real heart of both Guardians Of The Galaxy and Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2, not just providing an upbeat and soulful soundtrack for the adventures of Starlord and co, but also the emotional core of the series – songs handed down to Peter Quill by his mum, Meredith, who died when he was young. If your lockdown listening could do with a boost of ‘70s soft rock and soulful jams, you’re in luck – James Gunn has just shared a playlist with a bunch of extra 'Awesome' songs. Taken from Empire Our take: The playlist is called Meredith Quill’s Complete Awesome Mix, comprising songs that informed that character on screen. GOTG films are of course well-loved by fans with a huge recognition going to soundtracks, and so this new playlist is long overdue! We won’t ruin what’s on it, so go search it out on Spotify now! DEL TORO WINS TWITTER The facts: Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro has kicked off an epic twitter thread that features a load of his cine-pals letting us know what they're reading, watching and listening to as they avoid climbing the walls. Del Toro's idea was to focus on what is keeping them all inspired as they wait out the various stay at home orders, and for them to offer suggestions to fans and followers, while keeping chatter about their own work to a minimum. Among those who contributed to the thread were Edgar Wright, Ava DuVernay, James Mangold and Brad Bird. Taken from Empire Our take: Del Toro is a master. A master of film, and a master at using Twitter for entertainment. He put out a simple tweet asking people what they are watching, and then you had a flood of people from the industry tweeting their viewing behaviour. Go to his thread to see all the films, but as Empire stated, the list of talent commenting shows his credentials as a father of film.
