When adding to your DVD collection, the decision has never been more important now thanks to streaming services at a touch of a button. So, each month, we look at what movies deserve a space on your home-cinema shrine… (commonly known as a DVD shelf). Here’s five films that we think have potential to be bought in a shop near you… DOCTOR SLEEP Director: Mike Flanagan Writers: Stephen King (based on the novel by), Mike Flanagan (screenplay) Stars: Ewan McGregor, Rebecca Ferguson, Kyliegh Curran Plot: Years following the events of "The Shining," a now-adult Dan Torrance must protect a young girl with similar powers from a cult known as The True Knot, who prey on children with powers to remain immortal. Our verdict: A decent follow up to the cult movie, The Shining. If you own its predecessor, then you need to buy this. LAST CHRISTMAS Director: Paul Feig Writers: George Michael (inspired by: the song "Last Christmas", written and composed by), Emma Thompson (story by) Stars: Emilia Clarke, Emma Thompson, Henry Golding Plot: Kate is a young woman subscribed to bad decisions. Working as an elf in a year-round Christmas store is not good for the wannabe singer. However, she meets Tom there. Her life takes a new turn. For Kate, it seems too good to be true. Our verdict: It’s a weird time to buy a Christmas movie, but you can just prepare early! It’s definitely worth having for the festive times. FORD VS. FERRARI Director: James Mangold Writers: Jez Butterworth, John-Henry Butterworth Stars: Matt Damon, Christian Bale, Jon Bernthal Plot: American car designer Carroll Shelby and driver Ken Miles battle corporate interference and the laws of physics to build a revolutionary race car for Ford in order to defeat Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966. Our verdict: An Oscar-nominated movie, with cracking action pieces and brilliant editing – a certain DVD shelf filler. FROZEN 2 Directors: Chris Buck, Jennifer Lee Writers: Jennifer Lee (screenplay by), Jennifer Lee (story by) Stars: Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Josh Gad Plot: Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, Olaf and Sven leave Arendelle to travel to an ancient, autumn-bound forest of an enchanted land. They set out to find the origin of Elsa's powers in order to save their kingdom. Our verdict: Similarly, to Doctor Sleep, if you have the first movie, you really need to own the second. To be fair, it does help that this is great too. KNIVES OUT Director: Rian Johnson Writer: Rian Johnson Stars: Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas Plot: A detective investigates the death of a patriarch of an eccentric, combative family. Our verdict: What a movie to end with, this is a must own. It has everything going for it and deserves a seat on the collection shelf. Leave a Reply. |
