Sometimes, films just stick with you. A lot of the time it’s a specific plot, or a cast member, or even a killer scene that is simply mesmerising. This feature is inspired by those majestic scenes, but with more of a focus on soundtrack that gives the movie its finishing touch. This is the second episode in this music feature, and there’s another focus on a particular genre… Episode three in this feature is all more about the musical movies because we just had too much last time out – see here. This time we are going to be looking at much more recent musicals, with the earliest being the brilliant Sing Street from back in 2016. The other two movies were released in 2017 and 2018 respectively. Now may we add, with this trio, we are not by any means saying these are the best three songs from any musical film ever – it is merely us saying these songs really make the scenes boom. You may argue they aren’t the best from the films themselves, but we think so! Without further ado, let’s get into it! La Vie En Rose – A Star is Born (2018) What a performance. What a star. What a scene! We’ll make no bones about it; we love this film; and this is the scene that makes A Star is Born take off. We first visit Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga separately before this sequence, but there’s nothing quite like the magic that sparks between them during La Vie En Rose. This scene is powerful, touching, sexy and alluring – all in equal measure. You see the glint in Jackson’s (Cooper) eye when he adoringly stares at Ally (Gaga). The slow-motion capture of her lying down on the bar as she looks straight down the lens gives you the tingling feeling too. The scene is just whimsical, and we could watch it for days. From the soundtrack to the framing - it’s faultless. The Other Side – The Greatest Showman (2017) As a whole, The Greatest Showman is not the greatest show for us. There are certain scenes that standout, but the film as a whole is rather meek. However, one of the aforementioned standout scenes is of course the showdown between Hugh Jackman and Zac Efron as they make their deal in the bar. The face-off between them is great to watch as it slowly unfolds, with Hugh really wanting Zac on side with his circus adventure. They take it in turns with a brilliant sing-off as their choreographed masterclass climaxes with a slick, top-and-tail bar dance off. The lyrics work a dream, hand in hand with the cinematography to cap a vividly worked scene and soundtrack. The Riddle of the Model – Sing Street (2016) Our final scene and soundtrack this month is from the masterful and simply gorgeous movie, Sing Street. Back in 2016 when we caught this on a whim, we were left charmed and in love with every single thing about it. From the music to the comedy, from the emotion to serious issues raised – Sing Street is perfect. One of the many flawless scenes in the movie is that of The Riddle of the Model sequence. This is the where the newly formed band shoot their first music video with the love interest in the centre of it all. The whole section is shot like an 80s video on cassette with the ripple effects down the screen, the over-exaggerated editing and you cannot move for makeup. It’s amusing, charismatic and most importantly, the music is really good. Give the soundtrack album a listen, we promise you won’t regret it. Leave a Reply. |
