Oscars 2020: Cineroom's predictions.

Picture
Like the Golden Globes and the BAFTAs, it wouldn’t be awards season if Cineroom didn’t do a feature on predicting the Oscars 2020 winners as well.

So, for the final time this year, we have gathered all our knowledge and scribbled down who we think will be taking home a golden statuette for their downstairs loo.

Here we go…
BEST PICTURE:
Ford v Ferrari
The Irishman
Jojo Rabbit
Joker
Little Women
Marriage Story
1917
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Parasite

We just simply cannot bet against the might of 1917. It sweeps the big award at nearly all other ceremonies, and we think it will get the final triumph here too.

BEST DIRECTOR:
Martin Scorsese - The Irishman
Todd Phillips - Joker
Sam Mendes - 1917
Quentin Tarantino - Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Bong Joon-ho - Parasite

Just like the Best Picture category, we think Sam Mendes will probably have the best 2020 year possible with a Knighthood and a Best Director gong.
BEST ACTOR:
Antonio Banderas - Pain and Glory
Leonardo DiCaprio - Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Adam Driver - Marriage Story
Joaquin Phoenix - Joker
Jonathan Pryce - The Two Popes

Only one winner, and it is the right winner. Finally, Phoenix will be an Academy Award winner.

BEST ACTRESS:
Cynthia Erivo - Harriet
Scarlett Johansson - Marriage Story
Saoirse Ronan - Little Women
Charlize Theron - Bombshell
Renée Zellweger - Judy

Renée will continue her dominance we think here, even though we believe Ms. Johansson deserves the nod.
SUPPORTING ACTOR:
Tom Hanks - A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood
Anthony Hopkins - The Two Popes
Al Pacino - The Irishman
Joe Pesci - The Irishman
Brad Pitt - Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Brad Pitt will pocket this, and deservedly so.

SUPPORTING ACTRESS:
Kathy Bates - Richard Jewell
Laura Dern - Marriage Story
Scarlett Johansson - Jojo Rabbit
Florence Pugh - Little Women
Margot Robbie - Bombshell

A difficult category here, but Laura Dern has gathered momentum with winners elsewhere and we think it will push her through to Oscar glory.
ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY:
Knives Out - Rian Johnson
Marriage Story - Noah Baumbach
1917 - Sam Mendes & Krysty Wilson-Cairns
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood - Quentin Tarantino
Parasite - Bong Joon-ho & Jin Won Han

We think Bong Joon-ho deserves recognition here, largely because Quentin already has two of these awards already – but we just can’t see it.

ADAPTED SCREENPLAY:
The Irishman - Steven Zaillian
Jojo Rabbit - Taika Waititi
Joker - Todd Phillips & Scott Silver
Little Women - Greta Gerwig
The Two Popes - Anthony McCarten

This is the toughest award to call. We think it could easily be Greta or Joker writers Todd and Scott or even Zaillian's brilliant script for The Irishman – but this could be the sole award for Jojo Rabbit, and we think the Academy will want to give it something.
ANIMATED FEATURE:
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World
I Lost My Body
Klaus
Missing Link
Toy Story 4

Missing Link’s missing link is the Oscar – we think it won’t be missing after 9th February.

INTERNATIONAL FILM:
Corpus Christi (Poland)
Honeyland (North Macedonia)
Les Misérables (France)
Pain and Glory (Spain)
Parasite (South Korea)

Parasite has this locked up and the statuette is already on a plane back to South Korea.
