Everyone works hard for their cash. So, when visiting the cinema, your decision is all the more important on what to spend a tenner on. Should you get a Netflix subscription? Or should you venture to your local silver screen? Let us do the research and you make the final call. Here’s five films that we think deserve your attention this fine March… ONWARD Director: Dan Scanlon Writers: Dan Scanlon (screenplay by), Jason Headley (screenplay by) Stars: Tom Holland, Chris Pratt, Julia Louis-Dreyfus Plot: Set in a suburban fantasy world, two teenage elf brothers embark on a quest to discover if there is still magic out there. Our verdict: This was one of the movies we were looking forward to when 2020 arrived. It has a stellar cast, it has an emotive, heartfelt narrative and under two hours in runtime. What more do you need from an animated feature? FINDING THE WAY BACK Director: Gavin O'Connor Writers: Brad Ingelsby (screenplay), Gavin O'Connor Stars: Ben Affleck, Janina Gavankar, Michaela Watkins Plot: A former HS basketball phenom, struggling with alcoholism, is offered a coaching job at his alma mater. As the team starts to win, he may have a reason to confront his old demons. But will it be enough to set him on the road to redemption? Our verdict: Every now and then, you enjoy a Ben Affleck independent movie. Affleck goes through peaks and troughs in the film business, and with Finding The Way Back, Ben is hoping to, erm, find his way back we guess! FIRST COW Director: Kelly Reichardt Writers: Jonathan Raymond (novel), Jonathan Raymond (screenplay by) Stars: John Magaro, Orion Lee, Rene Auberjonois Plot: A skilled cook has travelled west and joined a group of fur trappers in Oregon, though he only finds true connection with a Chinese immigrant also seeking his fortune; soon the two collaborate on a successful business. Our verdict: First Cow was on many film critics must-see lists of 2020, and now it’s here for general release already. It’s poignant and endearing, go seek it out. A QUIET PLACE PART 2 Director: John Krasinski Writers: Scott Beck (characters), John Krasinski Stars: Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, John Krasinski Plot: Following the events at home, the Abbott family now face the terrors of the outside world. Forced to venture into the unknown, they realise the creatures that hunt by sound are not the only threats lurking beyond the sand path. Our verdict: Our simple verdict is… go and bloody see it. The first instalment was a joy and a cinematic experience as good as anything. Now Part two has arrived, we expect no different. Tickets purchased. MULAN Director: Niki Caro Writers: Rick Jaffa (screenplay by), Amanda Silver (screenplay by) Stars: Yifei Liu, Donnie Yen, Jet Li Plot: A young Chinese maiden disguises herself as a male warrior in order to save her father. A live-action feature film based on Disney's 'Mulan.' Our verdict: The animated version was brilliant in the nineties, and now the live-action remake follows suit.
