2020 is set to be a big year for Cineroom when it comes to festivals, with the hope to be covering more cinema events then we have ever done before! Our next stop is the Glasgow Film Festival (26th Feb – 8th Mar), this being our second time visiting in the last three years. Have a look at our rundown of movies we are seeing… EDEN Glasgow Film Festival says: In this fast-paced look at life in Reykjavik’s drug scene, Lóa and Óliver meet in unusual circumstances. While escaping from the police, Óliver accidentally stumbles into a flat and saves Lóa’s life. The pair are both users and dealers, but want nothing more than to escape and start a new life. However, the situation becomes considerably more complicated when they decide to use stolen narcotics from an infamous drug lord to fund their escape plans. Director Snævar Sölvason Cast Telma Huld Jóhannesdóttir, Hansel Eagle, Arnar Jónsson Country Iceland ESCAPE FROM PRETORIA Glasgow Film Festival says: A thrilling dramatisation of true events, Escape from Pretoria is based on the book by Tim Jenkin, played here by Daniel Radcliffe. Jenkin and Stephen Lee (Daniel Webb) are two white South Africans labelled ‘terrorists’ and imprisoned for their activism on behalf of the ANC. Sent to the brutal maximum security Pretoria Central Prison, ‘the white man’s Robben Island’, they start to plan a great escape that requires an ingenious use of handcrafted wooden keys. Director Francis Annan Cast Daniel Radcliffe, Daniel Webber, Ian Hart Country UK / Australia OLYMPIC DREAMS Glasgow Film Festival says: When Penelope (Alexi Pappas) discovers that her lifelong dream of participating in the Olympics doesn’t match up to reality, she finds herself adrift amongst the crowds. That is until she befriends a volunteer dentist Ezra (Nick Kroll), where a bond forges which forces the two to rethink their course in life. Director Jeremy Teicher Cast Nick Kroll, Alexi Pappas Country USA / South Korea PARADISE Glasgow Film Festival says: Doing the right thing carries risks and rewards in Paradise, a wonderfully melancholic fish out of water farce with a soulful performance from rising star Vincenzo Nemolato. Sicilian slushie vendor Calogero is enrolled in a witness protection programme after observing a Mafia killing. Now he is far from home as the sole resident of the Paradise inn high in the Alps. The arrival of a fellow Sicilian (the deadpan Giovanni Calcagno) is more than a coincidence and prompts Calogero to take desperate measures. Perhaps the two men have more in common than they realise. Director Davide Del Degan Cast Vincenzo Nemolato, Giovanni Calcagno, Katarina Cas Country Italy / Slovenia DENMARK Glasgow Film Festival says: Sometimes a great escape is the only option. Welshman Herb (Rafe Spall) has neither work nor hope in his life. His prospects are as dismal as the weather. There is absolutely nothing left to lose when he heads to Denmark with a cunning plan to get himself arrested. The country prides itself on the compassion and creature comforts it provides to convicted felons. A modest criminal act should suffice to ensure him a carefree life of luxury behind bars. It isn’t quite that simple in a bittersweet comedy where desperate measures might just lead to unexpected opportunities. Director Adrian Shergold Cast Rafe Spall, Benedikte Hansen, Steve Speirs Country UK OTHERS WE ARE HOPING TO CATCH…
SUPERNOVA Glasgow Film Festival says: It is a peaceful Sunday morning in a quiet Polish village. A woman has made her decision to leave her drunken husband. She has two small children and some possessions. In a few brief moments, a horrible accident will entwine the destiny of this broken family with a politician and a local policeman. Director Bartosz Kruhlik Cast Marek Braun, Marcin Hycnar, Marcin Zarzeczny ETERNAL BEAUTY Glasgow Film Festival says: Normal is boring in Craig Roberts’ warm and winning salute to an irrepressible spirit. Jane (an extraordinary Sally Hawkins) was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in her 20s. Her life has been measured in breakdowns and institutions. She now lives independently and remains upbeat, determined and easily the nicest person in her vile, self-centred family. Stopping her medication opens up a brave new world that includes an attraction to kindred spirit Mike (David Thewlis). Director Craig Roberts Cast Sally Hawkins, David Thewlis, Alice Lowe Leave a Reply. |
