A couple of weeks ago, the BAFTAs enraged the majority of the film world with the release of their narrow-minded nominations. There’s not a single person of colour in the acting categories, and it’s the seventh year in a row where women have been shut out for a directing nod. Thank heavens Parasite is being acknowledged, because we see that winning at least one award at the BAFTAs this year… BEST FILM 1917 The Irishman Joker Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood Parasite 1917 is a great film, and it’s very BAFTA – give it to the movie now. BEST DIRECTOR Sam Mendes (1917) Martin Scorsese (The Irishman) Todd Phillips (Joker) Quentin Tarantino (Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood) Bong Joon Ho (Parasite) 1917 has masterful direction, and Sam Mendes does deserve a golden face. We are also fan of Marty’s direction for The Irishman too. BEST ACTRESS Jessie Buckley (Wild Rose) Scarlett Johansson (Marriage Story) Saoirse Ronan (Little Women) Charlize Theron (Bombshell) Renée Zellweger (Judy) We want ScarJo, but we’re sure it’ll be RenZell. BEST ACTOR Leonardo Dicaprio (Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood) Adam Driver (Marriage Story) Taron Egerton (Rocketman) Joaquin Phoenix (Joker) Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes) We have to back, and we think he deserves it, Joaquin Phoenix for Joker. But Taron in Rocketman is also a delight. BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS Laura Dern (Marriage Story) Scarlett Johansson (Jojo Rabbit) Florence Pugh (Little Women) Margot Robbie (Bombshell) Margot Robbie (Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood) Laura Dern has this in her pocket already. Her 15 mins in Marriage Story is a tour-de-force. BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR Tom Hanks (A Beautiful Day In The Neighbourhood) Anthony Hopkins (The Two Popes) Al Pacino (The Irishman) Joe Pesci (The Irishman) Brad Pitt (Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood) Brad Pitt will collect this award, and rightfully so. Mr Pitt had a cracking year in 2019 with Ad Astra too. BEST FILM NOT IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE The Farewell For Sama Pain And Glory Parasite Portrait Of A Lady On Fire PARASITE should win. PARASITE must win. PARASITE will win. BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY Susanna Fogel, Emily Halpern, Sarah Haskins, Katie Silberman (Booksmart) Rian Johnson (Knives Out) Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story) Quentin Tarantino (Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood) Han Jin Won, Bong Joon-Ho (Parasite) This is a difficult one, but we think Quentin will just edge out a late charge from both Parasite and Marriage Story.
