Alternative artists' posters: Ep. #4

Picture
When a new movie is upon us all, what’s the first thing we do? Check IMDB for any updates, then probably watch the trailer, and then perhaps even check alternative posters… well we do!

In this feature, we want to shine a light on the artists who create those complementary artworks for the production companies. In episode #4, we have a stellar foursome for you…
Alternative Artist #1: LUKE BUTLAND
Our first artist to praise in this edition is probably coming in with the best alternative poster for us this time. Luke Butland is a UK-based freelance creative and illustrator with over 10 years’ experience. So much so that his past clients and official artwork has spanned big titles such as Deadpool 2, Toy Story 4, Dumbo and Joker.

But it is not for any of the above for why we are here. Disney+’s new Muppets show has had many artists submit their work to promote the show, but there are few better than Luke’s. His Midsommar-inspired design is vivid, has buckets of warmth and is uber colourful. It’s one of the most eye-catching posters we have ever featured. Check it out below.

Alternative Artist #2: NEIL DAVIES
The second spotlight this time is on Neil Davies. Davies is an alternative movie poster, portrait and caricature illustrator from Swindon, UK. He also has a wealth of experience spanning lots of different focus points. Anything from politics to movies, they have all had his talent in the poster making arena.

This time though, it’s all about his special John Wick series of posters, namely the first one in his collection. It’s extremely vibrant, clean and moody. This would make an excellent wall poster to lift any room it’s placed upon. Check out the rest of his John Wick series on his Twitter now.

Alternative Artist #3: DANIEL NORRIS
Dan Norris is a veteran when it comes to alternative posters. He hails from London and calls himself a “storyteller for the eye”. His longlist of clients include: Twentieth Century Fox, Marvel, Netflix and TNT. They are big names, and his artwork is certainly big on impressions too.

Today, we will be looking at a classic Alfred Hitchcock movie poster he commissioned. His take on the 1960 movie Psycho is stuff of minimal mastery. There’s so little going on, but it’s extremely compelling. The shading and subtle character in the window is a powerful look. It’s a quietly dominant piece and one that makes our list today!

Alternative Artist #4: SKINNER CREATIVE
The final artist we are appreciating today in episode 4 is the brilliant Chris Skinner, better known online as Skinner Creative. He is a Midlands-based illustrator and artist who creates artwork based on popular film, graphic novels and popular culture. He uses a mixture of techniques in his illustration work including traditional media, 2D digital, 3D modelling and digital sculpting – a truly exceptional fellow.

And speaking of 2D digital and 3D modelling, his piece on Blade Runner 2049 is the artwork we are shining a spotlight on today. It is truly an astounding poster that has so much detail on it, you really need to spend a lot of time checking it out. It is such a complex piece with an amazing amount of effort scattered throughout. You can see from this poster nearly everything that you remember from the movie, it’s such a great alternative poster.
