When a new movie is upon us all, what’s the first thing we do? Check IMDB for any updates, then probably watch the trailer, and then perhaps even check alternative posters… well we do! In this feature, we want to shine a light on the artists who create those complementary artworks for the production companies. We have a stellar foursome for you… Alternative Artist #1: DOALY First up in this edition is the Birmingham based designer and illustrator, Doaly. He’s a prolific illustrator with lots of artwork out on show and to purchase. Doaly has a wealth of experience and an illustrious client-base including: the BBC, Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Lucas Film, Warner Bros, 20th Century Fox, Sony Pictures, Wired and Sony PlayStation – very impressive. Doaly caught our attention recently with his latest artwork offering for Doom Patrol Season 2’s release. His poster has been shared across Twitter by multiple outlets, including his 6,300 followers. The poster is striking and beautiful in equal measure. The colours and design style pop with the butterfly as a key focus; leaving it looking like it’s 3-D. What a brilliant piece. Her name is Boryana Ilieva who is an incredible artist and architect hailing from Sofia, Bulgaria. In the early parts of her career, she was inspired by Juhani Pallasmaa after reading his book “The Architecture of Image”, where he explores lived-in space in five films by four iconic directors: Hitchcock, Tarkovsky, Antonioni, Kubrick. From this, Boryana showcases her love of film and talent in such beautiful ways. Her work is based on extracting floor plans of main character houses in notable films. We decided to choose her staggering Midsommar poster that perfectly encapsulates the film. The artwork is intelligent, prominent and vivid. Her work is a dream. Dakota has spent the better part of a decade honing his craft and working on a multitude of projects ranging from illustration, digital imagery, movie poster design, and graphic design projects both commercial and creative. Out of the 2,300 Twitter followers, three notable accounts would be clients too: Paramount, Warner Bros. and I Heart Comix. Dakota doesn’t mess around! Talking of not messing around, Dakota’s Captain America: Winter Soldier poster is something to behold. The intricate detail across the characters is expertly crafted, with a simple eye-catching backdrop comprising of the USA colours is the perfect contrast to get the best out of the overall image. A brilliant take on the movie. Sean Longmore goes by that title on Twitter, where we came across his talent through a few accounts sharing his brilliant James Bond pieces. Sean is a Senior Designer from Manchester who works for an agency called The Lowry, whilst also doing his personal designs for movies. He’s made our list of four today due to his aforementioned James Bond takes, and more importantly his astonishing Casino Royale artwork. The foreground is intense with the two protagonists looking down the barrel, and a big ‘007’ title with a subtle Japanese sub-header. This is all over the top of a sunken yet busy background which really lifts the focus of the forefront. It’s a really well considered piece that’s executed to perfection. Give him a follow, he deserves more than 1k! Twitter: @ThatTallGinger Website: www.etsy.com/uk/shop/SeanLongmoreDesign Artwork: credit here from Twitter Who is your favourite ‘Alternative Artist’?
