When a new movie is upon us all, what’s the first thing we do? Check IMDB for any updates, then probably watch the trailer, and then perhaps even check alternative posters… well we do! In this feature, we want to shine a light on the artists who create those complementary artworks for the production companies. We have a stellar foursome for you… Alternative Artist #1: DAUS First up on our appreciation of artists feature is the Leeds-based Daus Illustration. His Instagram is stuff of beauty. There’s incredible artwork after artwork that is destined to be on many people’s walls. He describes himself as a Visual Artist, but judging by his Insta, his Grandfather thinks he is a wizard! The piece we want to talk about, and highlight, is the majestic Interstellar alternative poster. It encapsulates everything about the movie in one strong, vivid image. The colours are muted but the depth is unreal. We see Matthew longingly staring with his treasured home on the ground and the planets above. It’s a truly out of this world piece – sorry! Going by the name of George Grey, this London-based Digital Artist and Graphic Designer is a talented fellow. Constantly pushing pixels, George knocks up countless posters that you just have to marvel at. Not only does he do movie posters though, he also does standalone artworks. In this feature, we are looking at one of his Cloud Series posters. Either for the love of Star Wars or to celebrate its monumental last six months, George created minimalist posters of his four favourite spaceships. We adore his simplicity on the Falcon one and therefore we had to share it. This isn’t about the intricacy here, but the strength in just a spaceship zooming through a picturesque sky. All we know about him is that he is born in 1991 and creates beautiful movie artwork. In particular for us today, his stunningly complex Capone poster is amazing. There are so many layers to it and the sheer difficulty to work with a lot going on but with very little colour is no mean feat. It is visually stunning and certainly stops you in your tracks. I can imagine this poster on a lot of walls. Hailing out of the UK, the Wales-based Illustrator/Designer is no stranger to creating alternative posters for his global clientele. His past conquests include Penguin Books, Disney, Warner Bros, 20th Century Fox and Netflix – an impressive roster! For us, it’s Rich’s Batman: Protector of Gotham piece. If you were ever looking for stylised, conversation-starting artwork for your home’s wall – you have found it! His Batman comic art is astonishing. Rich has used a limited colour palette to ensure the moody and gritty feel is there but still enough life in the colours to steal a room’s gaze. This is one of our favourites. We’d love to check them out and ultimately share their genius with the world!
