This is Cineroom’s annual feature that doesn’t always go so well, but for 2020, we’re feeling positive that we can hit a personal best. Basically, we choose five films that are being released this year that we think will hit a $billion or more. A previous best being three out of five in 2017. We’ve got an inkling though; it’s going to be five out of five in 2020… ONWARD Release date: 6th March 2020 Set in a suburban fantasy world, two teenage elf brothers embark on a quest to discover if there is still magic out there. Director: Dan Scanlon Writers: Dan Scanlon (screenplay by), Jason Headley (screenplay by) Stars: Tom Holland, Chris Pratt, Julia Louis-Dreyfus Verdict: Let’s be honest, when a Pixar-Disney movie is released, it smashes the gate receipts. This has a $billion written all over it. Next! MULAN Release date: 27th March 2020 A young Chinese maiden disguises herself as a male warrior in order to save her father. A live-action feature film based on Disney's 'Mulan.' Director: Niki Caro Writers: Rick Jaffa (screenplay by), Amanda Silver (screenplay by) Stars: Yifei Liu, Donnie Yen, Jet Li Verdict: The live-action remakes have served well for Disney over the last five years, and we think Mulan will be no different. The animation was a huge success, and 2020 is ready for another powerful female lead. BLACK WIDOW Release date: 1st May 2020 A film about Natasha Romanoff in her quests between the films Civil War and Infinity War. Director: Cate Shortland Writers: Ned Benson (screenplay), Don Heck (comic book & character) Stars: Florence Pugh, Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr. Verdict: ScarJo, FloPu and RoJnr – this has a recipe for a box office treat. This film has been screamed for for many years, and so the success will follow. FAST & FURIOUS 9 Release date: 22nd May 2020 Plot unknown. The ninth instalment of the 'Fast and Furious' franchise. Director: Justin Lin Writers: Daniel Casey (screenplay), Chris Morgan Stars: Charlize Theron, Vin Diesel, John Cena, Helen Mirren Verdict: These movies just seem to do well, no matter what instalment it is. We just can’t bet against it. It was toss-up between this and No Time To Die… but we’ve gone with our gut. WONDER WOMAN 1984 Release date: 5th June 2020 Plot unknown. A sequel to the 2017 superhero film 'Wonder Woman.' Director: Patty Jenkins Writers: Geoff Johns (story), Patty Jenkins (story) Stars: Gal Gadot, Kristen Wiig, Chris Pine, Pedro Pascal Verdict: This is a huge movie, so we didn’t spend long on thinking about its looming success.
