A box office bet: 2020.

This is Cineroom’s annual feature that doesn’t always go so well, but for 2020, we’re feeling positive that we can hit a personal best.

Basically, we choose five films that are being released this year that we think will hit a $billion or more. A previous best being three out of five in 2017.

We’ve got an inkling though; it’s going to be five out of five in 2020…
ONWARD
Release date: 6th March 2020

Set in a suburban fantasy world, two teenage elf brothers embark on a quest to discover if there is still magic out there.
Director: Dan Scanlon
Writers: Dan Scanlon (screenplay by), Jason Headley (screenplay by)
Stars: Tom Holland, Chris Pratt, Julia Louis-Dreyfus

Verdict:
Let’s be honest, when a Pixar-Disney movie is released, it smashes the gate receipts. This has a $billion written all over it. Next!
MULAN
Release date: 27th March 2020

A young Chinese maiden disguises herself as a male warrior in order to save her father. A live-action feature film based on Disney's 'Mulan.'
Director: Niki Caro
Writers: Rick Jaffa (screenplay by), Amanda Silver (screenplay by)
Stars: Yifei Liu, Donnie Yen, Jet Li

Verdict:
The live-action remakes have served well for Disney over the last five years, and we think Mulan will be no different. The animation was a huge success, and 2020 is ready for another powerful female lead.
BLACK WIDOW
Release date: 1st May 2020

A film about Natasha Romanoff in her quests between the films Civil War and Infinity War.
Director: Cate Shortland
Writers: Ned Benson (screenplay), Don Heck (comic book & character)
Stars: Florence Pugh, Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr.

Verdict:
ScarJo, FloPu and RoJnr – this has a recipe for a box office treat. This film has been screamed for for many years, and so the success will follow.
FAST & FURIOUS 9
Release date: 22nd May 2020

Plot unknown. The ninth instalment of the 'Fast and Furious' franchise.
Director: Justin Lin
Writers: Daniel Casey (screenplay), Chris Morgan
Stars: Charlize Theron, Vin Diesel, John Cena, Helen Mirren

Verdict:
These movies just seem to do well, no matter what instalment it is. We just can’t bet against it. It was toss-up between this and No Time To Die… but we’ve gone with our gut.

WONDER WOMAN 1984

Plot unknown. A sequel to the 2017 superhero film 'Wonder Woman.'
Director: Patty Jenkins

This is a huge movie, so we didn’t spend long on thinking about its looming success. In Patty Jenkins, we trust.
