77th Golden Globes: A review.

Picture
Last night, 5th January 2020, the 77th edition of the Golden Globes took place in Los Angeles with Hollywood’s finest out in force.

As for our predictions, they were shambolic – but for good reason we believe. The winners on the night were hard to argue with.

But first before our review, let’s have a quick look at some highlights…
Best Motion Picture -- Musical or Comedy
ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD
Jojo Rabbit
Knives Out
Rocketman
Dolemite Is My Name

Verdict:
We got this wrong, but we are happy to. We loved Quentin’s epic movie, but we thought the Hollywood Foreign Press would plump for Jojo. They saw the light.
Best Motion Picture -- Drama
The Irishman
Marriage Story
1917
Joker
The Two Popes

Verdict:
What a tough category, we could have made a case for any of them – which meant the prediction was so hard. And yes, we failed again.
Best Director -- Motion Picture
Bong Joon-ho (Parasite)
SAM MENDES (1917)
Todd Phillips (Joker)
Martin Scorsese (The Irishman)
Quentin Tarantino (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood)

Verdict:
Another tough line up, all five films are brilliant, as is the direction. Nearly an impossible choice.
Best Actor in a Motion Picture -- Musical or Comedy
Daniel Craig (Knives Out)
Roman Griffin Davis (Jojo Rabbit)
Leonardo DiCaprio (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood)
TARON EGERTON (Rocketman)
Eddie Murphy (Dolemite Is My Name)

Verdict:
We are ecstatic Taron got the love here, as his performance is so much better than Rami Malek’s last year. But Leo deserved a statuette too.
Best Actress in a Motion Picture -- Musical or Comedy
AWKWAFINA (The Farewell)
Ana de Armas (Knives Out)
Cate Blanchett (Where'd You Go, Bernadette)
Beanie Feldstein (Booksmart)
Emma Thompson (Late Night)

Verdict:
No quarrels or qualms, fair play.
Best Actor in a Motion Picture -- Drama
Christian Bale (Ford v Ferrari)
Antonio Banderas (Pain and Glory)
Adam Driver (Marriage Story)
JOAQUIN PHOENIX (Joker)
Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes)

Verdict:
Over the moon with this. We are big fans of both Marriage Story and Joker, but even more so the two leads. Phoenix is the best actor working today. Period.
Best Actress in a Motion Picture -- Drama
Cynthia Erivo (Harriet)
Scarlett Johansson (Marriage Story)
Saoirse Ronan (Little Women)
Charlize Theron (Bombshell)
RENEE ZELLWEGER (Judy)

Verdict:
We are Scarlett fans, but this was always going to be the only outcome.
