Closing the week will be an incredible video from Mad Max: Fury Road testing footage…
Spike Lee returns… but to TV.
Many moons ago, Spike Lee made a film called She’s Gotta Have It. And now in 2016, he will be turning to Netflix to bring the indie film into the TV world.
The TV show will be a multi-part drama that stays true to the narrative. It’ll follow Nola Darling, a Brooklyn-based artist in her late twenties struggling to define herself and divide her time amongst her friends, her job and her three lovers: the cultured model, Greer Childs; the protective investment banker, Jamie Overstreet; and ‘da original B-Boy Sneakerhead’, Mars Blackmon (played in the original film by Lee himself).
It will be a ten-episode series with Lee directing them all. The cast is currently being recruited and will look to start shooting in New York next month. The series is hoping to arrive later next year.
Nocturnal Animals gets its first trailer!
Venezia73 is well and truly over and so we had the pleasure of catching Nocturnal Animals in full. We in fact reviewed it and you can read the review here. But now, the rest of the world can see the first trailer of Tom Ford’s highly anticipated film.
It’s been seven years since Ford’s A Single Man and now he is back with a bang! Well, a thriller actually but it certainly packs a punch! Animals is about an art gallery owner (Amy Adams) is haunted by her ex-husband's (Jake Gyllenhaal) novel, a violent thriller she interprets as a veiled threat and a symbolic revenge tale.
A supporting cast of Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Armie Hammer, Isla Fisher and an awesome performance by Michael Shannon are on hand to really put this movie on the map. Nocturnal Animals debuts in the UK at the BFI London Film Festival next month before opening across the UK on 4 November.
Harley Quinn gets the go-ahead!
There has been much debate about a Harley Quinn standalone film, even way before Suicide Squad was released last month. But finally, we are near an official confirmation.
Margot Robbie has agreed to a first-look deal with Warner Bros. to bring Harley Quinn back to the big screen in a solo project away from the rest of her cronies in Suicide Squad according to The Hollywood Reporter. She will also serve as producer on the film.
Interestingly, the film will not solely focus on Quinn. When researching the backstory of Harley, Robbie found interest in a variety of female characters within the DC Comics Universe. Details are very secretive at the moment but the initial idea is to have several female characters from both sides of the law make an appearance in the film – which will be also be written by female writer.
It’s massively early days currently but what an exciting prospect. This will be like what Ghostbusters should have been (sorry!) hopefully. Harley Quinn could team up with Poison Ivy, how epic would that be?
Double trailer alert!
Two huge trailers were released this week and we have them below. Firstly, The Pass starring Russell Tovey and Arinzé Kene, which is screening at the London Film Festival, debuted its first trailer earlier this week and received a great reception.
Tovey and Kene play football players Jason and Ade, who when we first meet them are 19-year-old rising stars at the academy of a famous London football club. Before their first-ever game for the first team – a Champions League match –they're in a hotel room in Romania. They should be sleeping, but they're over-excited. Then one thing leads to another and kissing begins… The impact of that one moment reverberates through the next decade of their lives - 10 years of fame and failure, secrets and lies, in a sporting world where image is everything.
The Pass has yet to announce a general release date, but this could end up being a very important film.
On the flip side, another trailer was released this week of a film that isn’t important at all. Fifty Shades Darker's first trailer dropped, and as expected, it was full of erotic imagery. This trailer also became the most watched trailer within a 24-hour period. The Fifty Shades Darker featurette was viewed 114 million times across YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and various other platforms.
Fifty Shades Darker will see the couple getting back together, only this time on Anastasia's terms. However, as this new relationship progresses, Christian's past will come to haunt them and threaten to separate them again. Let’s just hope it’s better than the prequel, it can’t surely get worse though can it? Can it??
Fury Road raw footage!
We had to end on this, we just had to. You must have heard all about how Mad Max: Fury Road was made right? Well we will refresh you then.
George Miller, a true cinema-marvel and director, made this re-boot of his Mad Max franchise without using any CGI whatsoever. He went on record and stated he had created around 40 models of each car in the film and effectively blew them up again and again in aid of great cinema. But until now, we have had limited evidence to believe him. So, feast your eyes on the best four minutes you will see this week.
The video below consists of movie sequences, raw camera footage and basically an explosive-fest of cars. This is real cinema!
